*insert confetti* I’m excited” It’s always nice to know that others appreciate your work, especially those that know what goes into running a blog.
Thank you so much to Heather of Sassy Sensibility for nominating me! Her site covers everything from self-development advice to yummy recipes so be sure to check her out!
How I got here
I started blogging with a group of friends in 2013 just for fun and because we wanted something to list on our UCAS personal statements lol- no shame in our game! I branched out on my own and created Behind the Schmile..:) in December 2016 and here I am a couple months later.
Initially I was under the impression that blogging was all about sharing OOTDs and beauty products, both of which I covered under the group blog Our Thoughts Your Eyes… Although I have a love for both fashion and beauty, I didn’t feel I was adding much value to anyone, especially myself. I’m a selfish person, I wanted to write about what could benefit me.
So 4 years on, here I am sharing my self-development journey for two main reasons:
1: I believe it’s important to share my struggle to let others know they aren’t alone
2: I often look back at my own work when I need to be inspired/motivted/encouraged – having this platform makes that easier to do
My advice for both new bloggers and experienced bloggers that need a little pick me up:
1: Always remind yourself of why you started
It can very easy to get distracted by all of these ‘How to grow your blog in 5 easy steps’ type posts and it can be very tempting to do all of these things! There’s nothing wrong with desiring a bigger following, but don’t lose sight of what makes you special in the first place. Don’t fall into the trap of focussing on topics that don’t interest you just because you want to be like everyone else. This is YOUR space, stay true to yourself and your mission. Don’t Get Lost in the Sauce!
2: Be confident!
I’m still working on this myself. Often times I’ll mention my blog to someone I’ve known for years only to find they had no idea that blogging is a hobby of mine. My own family didn’t know until very recently and even a few friends of mine that new had never actually seen it. This is mostly because I was/still am afraid to share. I spend a lot of time on posts and hope that it will magically fall onto the screen of the person that needs it.
You need to be intentional about your blog, otherwise you might aswell just keep a personal diary and not waste your time publishing. Maybe this advice is slightly harsh, but that’s because I know I have work to do regarding this and I’m trying to push myself.
Don’t be ashamed of your content, be bold and confident: promote your personal brand!
